Lex Marinos at Hurstville Library

Join well known actor Lex Marinos at Hurstville Library when he introduces his recently published book, Blood and Circuses An Irresponsible Memoir.
Best known for his role as Bruno Bertolucci in Kingswood Country, in his early years on TV, and more recently for his powerful performance as the majestic patriarch, Manolis, in The Slap , Lex Marinos' career has been a 40-journey of survival in the entertainment business.
His memoir, is a vivid account of a life lived to the full. Growing up as a young Greek Australian boy, whose family were members of the 'milk bar aristocracy' in Wagga Wagga, Lex dream't of making his life in the theatre.
As expected of a memoir describing the wild days of the 70s cultural revolution, sex, drugs and rock and roll just had to be involved. Lex also takes us back to the hippie era of university, heady nights working on radio Double J, precarious road-trips around Australia in travelling theatre groups and happy memories as a sports commentator.
Lex is also a director, a writer on the arts and culture diversity in Australia, and an all round media personality .

Author Carol Baxter, "the history detective", at Hurstville Library

Author Carol Baxter
Join Carol Baxter at Hurstville Library when she talks about her writing and introduces her latest book The Peculiar Case of the Electric Constable which tells the true story of John Tawell, the first "murderer" caught using the electric telegraph. The consequences of his apprehension and his sensational trial launched the Communication Revolution.
Thieves, murderers, adulterers and philanderers are just some of the real life rogues acclaimed author and genealogist Carol Baxter brings to life in her popular Australian histories. Although not fiction, many reviewers and readers have commented that her books are, "as gripping as thrillers".
With an extensive background in genealogical research, Carol ventured into the area of popular history writing when she discovered the delicious story of a pivotal sex-scandal in colonial New South Wales, leading to her first book. An Irresistible Temptation in 2004, followed by Breaking the Bank: An Extraordinary Colonial Robbery and Captain Thunderbolt and his Lady: the true story of bushrangers Frederick Ward and Mary Ann Bugg.

Carol is a Fellow of the Society of Australian Genealogists and an adjunct lecturer at the University of New England.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK: Stories from 14 MacMahon Street

Hurstville Museum & Gallery exhibition
18 January - 11 May 2014

Over the last few months, Hurstville Museum & Gallery celebrated its tenth anniversary of residing at 14 MacMahon Street with an exhibition about the history of our Tudor style building.

Since the house was built in 1929 it has been used for many different purposes, including a residence, doctor's practice, rugby club, theatre restaurant, function centre and gallery.

The exhibition featured memories of former tenants and members of the community, photographs and interesting objects that helped to uncover the many stories of the building.

"Wonderful hearing Granny's stories here come to life."

Listen to Philippa describe the layout of her childhood home and other stories of 14 MacMahon Street.

"Beautifully presented - memory space. Loved the cake/ dripping pot/ costumes."

Many of our Museum & Gallery visitors still have their own fond memories of 14 MacMahon Street and greatly enjoyed our exhibition and public programs.
Our most popular event was a series of High Teas at the Museum & Gallery and was kindly sponsored by The Gardens on Forest.

"Congrats! On a great job... Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a wonderful day!"
