Sydney Writers' Festival and Hurstville Library present an evening with Bruce Lourie

Bruce Lourie
Be part of the Sydney Writers' Festival!
Hurstville Library, in partnership with the Sydney Writers' Festival, will host an evening with Canadian author and prominent environmentalist Bruce Lourie.
In news just to hand Bruce has been declared the winner of the 2014 Earth Day Canada Outstanding Commitment to the Environment Award!  This is regarded as a long overdue acknowledgment as Bruce enters his 25th year as a professional environmentalist.

Bruce and co-author Rick Smith were a big hit at the 2010 SWF when they talked about the research they undertook (much of it on themselves) into the harm chemicals can have on our bodies and our environment. Their findings were the subject of their runaway best-seller Slow Death by Rubber Duck.

In Toxin Toxout  they went one step further to answer the question they were frequently asked afterwards, “How do I get this stuff out of my body?”  Renowned for presenting his and Rick's research findings in an amusing, easy to understand yet informative way, this evening with Bruce is a must for anyone interested in the effect harmful chemicals have on our health and environment.  Find out more here

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK

Stories from 14 MacMahon Street – Hurstville Museum & Gallery

In 2003 Hurstville City Council was looking for a new home for the St George Regional Museum, previously called The Centennial Bakery Museum. The museum, which included a large bakery item collection and historical artefacts from the Hurstville Historical Society, was outgrowing the small corner building on Forest Road and Bridge Street. 14 MacMahon Street became available after the Fanari Restaurant & Bar had closed and it seemed to be the perfect place for the museum!

The Mayor of Hurstville, Clr Vince Badalati officially opened the St George Regional Museum on Friday 6 February 2004. On display in the exhibition are the original pair of scissors to cut the red ribbon, which was spanned across the entrance.

Since 2004, 14 MacMahon Street has attracted over 110,000 visitors, more than 170 exhibitions and too many public programs to count.

Do you remember the exhibition Ned Kelly – Fact and Fiction’, a travelling exhibition by the National Museumof Australia, Canberra?
It was a very popular exhibition at the St George Regional Museum in 2007.

These are just some of the stories of 14 MacMahon Street. Come and visit the multisensory exhibition IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK  to find out more about the building’s past.
Exhibition on show until Sunday 11 May 2014.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK

Stories from 14 MacMahon Street - Weddings

Many happy couples have celebrated their wedding receptions at the restaurants and functions centres of 14 MacMahon Street.

Prior to becoming Hurstville Museum & Gallery in 2004, 14 MacMahon Street was home to MacMahon’s Manor, MacMahon Street Galleries & Restaurant and Fanari Restaurant & Bar, just to name a few.

Julie Meredith is one of the many brides who celebrated their reception with family and friends at MacMahon Street Galleries & Restaurant. For Julie, the venue was a last minute decision as their prior chosen venue was undergoing construction work. With only six weeks to go, 14 MacMahon Street saved the day with it’s homely feel and inviting atmosphere - “We liked that it was a bit of a gallery, something a little bit different rather than just four walls.”

They had 80 guests at the wedding reception – the maximum number if you wanted to have a dance floor as well! One of the standout memories for Julie was the speech her husband gave – “he had the whole reception in tears, then in laughter, he made a beautiful speech.”
