The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin is my favourite Sci-Fi novel. This 1969 classic is a political thriller with a strong spiritual element. It's a small book, not the 500 page tomes we've come to expect in Sci-Fi. Set on an ice age planet called Winter, the story is told by the first Envoy sent to ask these people to join a coalition of trading planets. Of course, they don't believe he is an alien from another planet but a spy! Wonderfully descriptive, this story takes time to unfold. Give it a chance. A Librarian
The Catcher in the Rye was one of my favourite books for long time. First I had read it in Russian. This book was in the list for my university course in world literature. The story was written by Jerome David Salinger about lonely and deeply depressed boy Holden, who expelled from school and moved to New York. His younger brother died recently and Holden is in grief. He is making his comments and sharing his thoughts, and the way it is done by the author forced you to take his pain and his thoughts very close to you heart. When I read it in English, I was in different age, but then I was impress by the hight level of the writing. I have learned word “phony”, used by Holden so many times in the book. I did recommend Catcher in the Rye to my son, and now this book becomes his favourite too.
