High school students – looking for something to do this school holidays?

Why not come to the Museum & Gallery for a 2-session workshop on Stencilling, where you will create stencilled graffiti style artworks on canvas or paper. The workshop will run over 2 weeks on Wednesday 4 July & Wednesday 11 July, and each session runs from 10.00am to 12.00pm.

Creative Workshops for Young People

Want to explore your creative side? Hurstville City Museum & Gallery is running a series of creative workshops for young people aged 12 – 18 years.

Upcoming topics include:

Saturday 21 April
1.30pm – 3.30pm
Painting with Watercolours
Enhance your painting repertoire with a session focusing on watercolours.

Saturday 19 May
1.30pm – 3.30pm
Self Portraits in Charcoal
Look at the fine art of drawing the human face, and create a portrait of yourself in charcoal and pastels.
NB: Each participant should bring a photograph of themself to work from.

Saturday 16 June
1.30pm – 3.30pm
Silk Painting Basics
Create your own design and learn how to paint it onto a silk scarf using silk paint and gutta.

Each workshop explores the basics of a new medium or artistic practice with qualified tutors, and materials are provided (unless otherwise stated). Participants will learn new skills and techniques and create their own original artwork to take home.

Official opening of FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Style

People braved the sweltering heat on Thursday 3, February to celebrate the opening of Hurstville City Museum & Gallery's latest exhibition FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Styles, photographs by Shoichi Aoki, a travelling exhibition from the Powerhouse Museum.

We are very grateful to everyone who attended the opening. A very big thank you to everyone who wore 'FRUiTS' inspired outfits!

The exhibition was officially opened by the Mayor of Hurstville City Council, Councillor Philip Sansom. We also heard from guest speaker Glynis Jones, Curator Fashion & Design at the Powerhouse Museum. Glynis is responsible for the Powerhouse Museum's fashion and dress collection. This collection includes:

• 18th Century to present day clothing and accessories
• Fashion plates and swatch books
• Designer label and manufacturer's archives
• Performance costumes from the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras

Glynis recounted what it was like working with Shoichi Aoki when developing the exhibition while Councillor Sansom shared his experiences of visiting Japan and seeing the fashion trends firsthand.

After enjoying some sushi guests and even Museum & Gallery staff dressed up and created their own crazy 'FRUiTS' ensemble and posed infront of our Tokyo street scene!

Installing our new exhibition FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Styles

Hurstville City Museum & Gallery staff have been as busy as bees these past few weeks as we installed our first main gallery exhibition for 2011:

FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Style photographs by Shoichi Aoki

This travelling exhibition from the Powerhouse Museum is a celebration of the fashion revolution which was instigated by the rebellious teenagers of Tokyo and their expressive and experimental wardrobes.

The exhibition consists of:

• Photographs of these unique fashion creations taken by Shoichi Aoki
• Ensembles created by local contemporary artists and fashion designers
• Dress ups - so you can create your own outfit and take your photograph in front of a Tokyo street!

Over the four days it took to install the exhibition Museum & Gallery staff and volunteers have carefully selected their favourite photographs and outfits. Visit Hurstville City Museum & Gallery to choose your favourite today!

Coming soon! - St George Art Awards 2010 exhibition

The inaugural St George Art Awards exhibition will be officially opened on Friday 29 October, 2010 at 6.00pm at Hurstville City Museum & Gallery (14 MacMahon St, Hurstville).

The biannual St George Art Awards is a national competition open to all Australian residents. To be eligible artists had to submit entries relating to the theme below:

Relationships [ri-ley-shuhn-ship] - noun
1. connection; a particular connection
2. connection by blood or marriage
3. an emotional connection

The theme enables artists to explore ideas such as the connections between and water; humans and the earth; disticy cultures; the past and present or emotional connections between people.

Prizes will be awarded the in the following categories:

• St George Art Prize 2010 - $8,000; Painting; Acquisitive
• St George 3D Art Prize - $3,000; 3D works
• St George Local Youth Prize - $500 of art materials; No theme, open to either paintings or drawings.

For the Awards inaugural year we are proud to have attracted entries by established artists, emerging talents, students and amateurs. Hurstville City Library, Museum & Gallery would like to thank all the artists who entered and warmly congratulate those selected for exhibition in the first year of the St George Art Awards.

An upcoming exhibition for 2011…

FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Style Photographs by Schochi Aoki


2011 will be here before we know it, so we wanted to introduce our first main gallery exhibition for next year to you.

Via this blog, you’ll be able to follow our process of organising and installing this exhibition.

We must confess that this is not exactly the beginning of the exhibition process…
Hurstville City Library, Museum and Gallery plans its exhibition schedule 2 years in advance meaning that staff have already been working on this exhibition for a while.

FRUiTS: Tokyo Street Style is a travelling exhibition from the Powerhouse Museum and the Museum & Gallery is lucky enough to be hosting it between February – April 2011.

As you can see in the image above, the photographs in this exhibition were taken by Shoichi Aoki. This exhibition details the fashion trends of the Harajuku district in Japan from the mid 1990s to the present.

At the moment the LMG is looking for local fashion students to contribute their own designs and interpretations of these fashion trends for possible exhibiting at the Museum & Gallery during the exhibition.

Katie Duncan - Trainee of the Year!

Congratulations to Katie Duncan who won ‘Trainee of the Year’ at the MG My Gateway 2010 Apprentice & Trainee Awards.

This year MG My Gateway employed 300 apprentices and trainees making it a very competitive field.The winners for all MG My Gateway awards were announced at an awards night at Campbelltown RSL, on Friday 3 September 2010.

Katie has been working as a Trainee in both Customer Service and Library, Museum & Gallery services over the past year. Katie now works as a Trainee in the Museum & Gallery. Katie is an outstanding trainee, who is dedicated to excellent customer service. She is always willing to assist colleagues as well as internal and external customers.

Katie shows enormous respect for her colleagues, her supervisors and to all staff within Council. Her maturity, calm attitude and enthusiasm are valued by all Council departments.

Katie commits 100% to her work and as a consequence Hurstville City Council has extended Katie’s traineeship by offering her the opportunity to complete Certificate IV in Business Administration earlier this year. Hurstville City Council feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to host Katie’s traineeship.
